It took place in Rome, the meeting of the European Management Committee (EMC) of Union Internationale des Chemins de Fer (Uic), an international institution that brings together the main actors and stakeholders of the railway sector, the first under the presidenza di Luigi Ferraris, CEO of the FS Group. Three i main themes discussed:
- Introduction of a new ticketing system to make traveling by train and other means of transport easier.
- Implementation of the Digital Twin, i.e. the digital twin of infrastructures, to improve predictive maintenance.
- The Dp-Rail project, aimed at increasing data exchange in cross-border freight transport.
Define the European rail transport roadmap
The objective of the UIC meeting was to set the agenda for the future rail transport roadmap in Europe and establish the region's main priorities for the next two years. Representatives of the main European railway operators participated, both in person and remotely, together with the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini.
Trains, the topics of the Uic meeting
The meeting focused on three main topics: the European ticketing system, Digital Twin technology and the Dp-Rail digital platform. The common objective of the UIC members is to promote the modal shift from private vehicles to trains to improve the sustainability, connectivity and integration of transport systems.
The new harmonized ticketing system and standardized in the context of the single European railway space will improve the passenger experience by allowing planning, purchasing and using travel by train or other modes of transport at a national and international level, ensuring access to all the necessary information in real time .
Il Digital Twin it is an exact, but digital, replica of an infrastructure work that could revolutionize the infrastructure system, guaranteeing significant advantages such as predictive maintenance, efficiency, cost reduction and environmental sustainability. Uniform development in Europe would enable the sharing of information and the mutual exchange of knowledge and know-how.
Regarding logistics and freight transport, the development and implementation of the Dp-Rail project, which aims to fill the gap in both quantity and quality of data needed for cross-border rail freight production processes.
Ferraris (FS): “European mobility must be transformed”
Luigi Ferraris was appointed President of the Europe Region last December with a two-year term. A two-year period that is characterized by a constantly changing macroeconomic and geopolitical context.
"I'm honored to have hosted in Rome the inaugural meeting of the European Management Committee 2024-2025 – he commented Luigi Ferraris – “Today, alongside the main European players in the sector, we discussed the future challenges that will impact rail transport and the entire mobility system at European level and beyond. Our main objective is to strengthen the railway system, to foster economic growth and attract new investments, with innovation and digitalisation as key elements for the transformation of European mobility.”
