Italy's tourism balance of payments is in surplus 0,6 billion euros. This is the most important data registered by Bank of Italy. Compared to 2024, foreign spending is 6% growth in Italy, and Italians spent 5% more abroad. These are the data recorded and disseminated by the statistics on International Tourism. A significant contributor is the increase recorded in overnight stays, thus increasing the per capita expenditure.
Foreign travellers in Italy spent a total of 3,2 billion. Italians, on the other hand, spent abroad 2,6 billion of euros. Italian travellers going abroad have opted more for destinations outside the European Union. On the contrary, travellers who have visited the Belpaese come from both from the European Union and from non-EU countries.
How spending varies between Italians travelling and foreigners in Italy
According to data provided by the Bank of Italy, travellers from the European Union are the ones who spend the most in Italy. In the first quarter, the expenditure was around 4,351 million of euros, against the 1,471 million of non-EU travellers, a category which includes the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Russia. They are followed by American and Canadian citizens who contribute with an expenditure of 1,446 million. Asia it stops just above to the million euros. In the first quarter of 2025, Italians who traveled in Europe spent 2,832 million euros. Those who went to non-EU countries spent 393 thousand euros in the United Kingdom, 360 thousand in Switzerland and just 12.000 in Russia. Italians in the US spent approximately 1 million and 265 thousand euros.
