Tim and Utilitalia, framework agreement for optical fiber

The initiative will give a major boost to the development of Tim's fiber optic network throughout the country. For the three-year period 2017-19, investments of 11 billion euros are planned in Italy, of which 5 dedicated solely to the implementation of fixed and mobile ultra-broadband

Tim and Utilitalia, framework agreement for optical fiber

The major cost linked to the development of broadband networks is represented by the excavations, necessary to insert the corrugated cables. Precisely to try to get around the high cost, Tim and Utilitalia have signed an agreement that aims to facilitate the use of the pre-existing infrastructures of over 500 operators of local public services (pipes, cable ducts and public lighting networks).

Utilitalia - the federation that brings together companies operating in the public services of electricity, gas, water and the environment on the national territory - has reached a non-exclusive agreement with Tim, defining a single procedure, operational immediately and applicable at national level for regulate operations for access and co-use of the infrastructures of companies that have joined the federation.

The Memorandum of Understanding will allow for the drastic reduction of excavations for laying the fiber, thus reducing the consequent inconvenience caused to citizens and road traffic. Another important advantage of the framework agreement is represented by the minimization of socio-environmental impacts.

The TIM-branded fiber optic network has already reached 71% coverage of the national territory, with over 17 million homes served in around 2100 municipalities.
