TIM with Philip Morris to digitize logistics at the Bologna site

TIM e Philip Morris Manufacturing & Technology Bologna together for  digitize the management of logistics in the Crespellano plant in Bologna, in order to make the flows of means of transport and goods more efficient and sustainable. It is an important digitization project based on the technologies of theInternet of Things.

In detail, the collaboration involves the use of an innovative system of Yard Management, i.e. the management of parking areas, created by TIM and Olivetti - the digital farm for the Group's IoT - which will make it possible to further improve planning as well as the tracking of the flows of means of transport and goods entering, stationary and leaving the production site, reducing waiting times for hauliers to a minimum.

The protagonist of the solution is a digital application, based on IoT technologies, which makes it possible to avoid the formation of queues and stationing. An innovation that will also have important positive effects on the sustainability environment, allowing a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions.

Furthermore, the digitization of logistics will make it possible to ensure greater security and transparency in the information processes of the supply chain, thus facilitating the controls of the competent authorities.

The partnership with the TIM Group is part of a series of collaborations and investments by the Philip Morris group in the Italian industrial landscape. In fact, both companies collaborate with the BI-REX Competence Center in Bologna – established by the Ministry of Economic Development in the framework of the Government Industry 4.0 plan – with a specific focus on the Big Data theme.

"We are particularly proud to carry out this project with the Philip Morris group dedicated to a production site of great importance for the local economy and which represents an effective example of collaboration with the players of the various production chains - declared Federico Rigoni, Chief Revenue Officer of TIM -. The initiative is also in line with our strategy in Italian industrial districts, where with our cutting-edge infrastructure and skills we want to support both small companies of excellence and important companies in the digital transformation attentive to the potential offered by technologies in the creation of value for the ecosystem".

"The project with TIM goes in the direction of constant improvement in the efficiency of our production structures in a logic of sustainability" - he underlined Marco Hannappel, President and Chief Executive Officer of Philip Morris Italia – we are pleased to start a collaboration with an Italian excellence with whom we are working to increasingly digitize our plant for combustion-free products, the protagonist of further significant investments this year ”.
