Tim turns on the first 5 Gigabit/s 20G antenna in Turin

With the support of the new technology, the first application in the field of virtual reality was also created: an immersive visit to Piazza Carlo Alberto from the Turin Polytechnic

Tim turns on the 5G engines in Turin and sets off with the road test of Italy's fastest network. A millimeter-wave 5G antenna was activated today at the Turin Polytechnic, the first in the entire national territory, thanks to which the record connection of over 20 Gigabit/s was achieved today, the maximum demonstrated by the new technology in the field urban. Furthermore, for the first time in Italy, a real-time virtual visit service has been created on an experimental 5G network system.

A project carried out in collaboration with Ericsson, which has made it possible to raise awareness of the potential of the 5G network, using the 28 GHz frequency band on millimeter waves, on which TIM is developing innovation together with world-class partners, such as Qualcomm Technologies Inc.

From the Turin Polytechnic it was possible to visit Piazza Carlo Alberto despite being on the other side of the city. An avatar guide accompanied the visitor - equipped with a viewer and sensors - in the historic square, thus giving the opportunity to experience the capabilities of virtual reality. An immersive experience obtained through the high level of speed of the 5G network which makes the interaction between the guide, the virtual environment and the visitor immediate – in milliseconds. And this is just the beginning: in the near future, tourists with a passion for Savoyard history will be able to enter the museums comfortably seated on the sofa at home in New York or any other city on the planet.

Turin, on the strength of scientific excellence such as the Polytechnic, thus confirms itself as the 5G capital of Italy and among the first cities in Europe to have a new generation mobile network. The record connection follows the memorandum of understanding signed last March between TIM and the Municipality of Turin, for the implementation of the "Turin 5G" project, which provides for progressive coverage of the city with the new generation network by 2020.

With the partnership in Turin, TIM and Ericsson strengthen a collaboration started last year with the "5G for Italy" program, which is giving life to an open ecosystem for the implementation of innovative projects and services enabled by the fifth generation network.

In this context, the collaboration between Tim and the Polytechnic University of Turin is being consolidated: joint research activities on 2018G will be carried out in 5 for the development of new generation applications.

The 5G network, with a transmission capacity 20 times greater than that of the current 4G, will be able to connect a very large number of objects and people to offer high-quality, personalized and highly engaging innovative services.
