Tim accelerates on the Open Ran: the first European Otic Lab in Turin

Tim advances in the goal of promoting the adoption and development of Open Ran (Radio access network) solutions in Europe. These are open solutions for the new ultrabroadband mobile access networks. The intention of the group led by Luigi Gubitosi is to accelerate the offer through its commercial network. In this way Tim intends to burn the competitors: the company - after the launch in Faenza of a first Open Ran solution on an active network - now becomes among the first operators in the world and the only one in Italy to start up the new laboratory European Otic Lab.

"The Open Test and Integration Center (Otic Lab) - specifies the press release with which Tim announces the opening of the laboratory - in line with the standards set by the O-Ran Alliance, will be located at the Innovation laboratories of the TIM Group in Turin and will operate in synergy with the entire Open Ran ecosystem (manufacturers, start-ups, system integrators, etc.) in order to experiment with new solutions and accelerate this technology for the development of the new pan-European mobile network architecture (5G, Cloud and Edge Computing )".

Indeed, the Otic Lab will work to develop implementations and solutions, as well as test and verify the conformity of Ran equipment (antennas, base stations, etc.) from single or different suppliers in order to provide technical results to the community on the experiences acquired during the test.

The development of Open Ran solutions, characterized by an open environment, allows, in line with the objectives of the Tim 2021-2023 plan 'Beyond Connectivity', to combine the potential of the cloud and Artificial Intelligence with the evolution of the mobile network. Furthermore, it allows operators to further strengthen security standards, improve network performance and optimize costs, in order to provide increasingly advanced digital services, such as those linked to new solutions for Industry 4.0, the smart city and 'autonomous driving. To promote the new infrastructure, Tim has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the main European operators (including: Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefonica and Vodafone).
