Tim accelerates on 5G: Naples leaves, 6 other cities within the year

Tim accelerate on 5G. After Torino e Roma, where it is already available, the new technology will also turn on in Naples from today ed by this year will be extended to six other cities: Milan, Bologna, Verona, Florence, Matera and Bari. The company announced it on Friday during an event in Rome, specifying that 50 industrial districts and 30 tourist destinations will also be reached in the next six months. At the same time, 30 specific projects for large enterprises will be activated, with speeds up to 2 Gigabit per second.

Like Vodafone, which announced the launch of 5G in five cities last month, Tim shows that he wants topush on new technology. The undeclared goal is increase data revenue as soon as possible, given that those related to telephony have suffered a sharp contraction, largely due to the ruthless competition from Iliad.

And so, off to the new plan: looking beyond 2019, Tim moves the bar to 2021, aiming to connect with 5G within three years 120 cities, 200 tourist destinations, 245 industrial districts and 200 projects specifically for large companies. The speed will gradually increase up to 10 Gbps, while the coverage in terms of inhabitants will rise to approx 22% of the Italian population.

“5G will lead to a hitherto unimaginable transformation of the fixed and mobile networks – writes the company – with performance 10 times higher than current ones: higher download speed (at least 10 times higher than 4G), lower latency (10 times lower than 4G), higher density of managed devices (up to 10 times), significant use of the Internet of Things to connect up to 1 million simultaneously of devices and sensors per Km2 with the highest quality and reliability”.

Il tourism and cultural sector is one of the first to be able to benefit from the applications of the new technology: with special visors it is possible to carry out immersive visits remotely in virtual reality to museums and historical places, with the possibility of conversing in the same virtual environment with a real tourist guide connected by kilometers of distance.

Another area of application of 5G is the cloud gaming, which offers the possibility of streaming and mobile gaming.

In optics Industry 4.0 applications have been launched in the field of robotics and industrial automation. With the mobile connection it is possible to command robotic arms using the functions that the 5G service offers in terms of bandwidth and latency. From remote devices such as laptops and tablets, it will be possible to manage production chains located in different locations, having control over them in real time.

“5G will change our lives for the better – comments Tim's CEO, Luigi gubitosi - The Health it will be one of the areas we will insist on: two remote operations experiments have already been done. We are launching research projects with seven of the main Italian universities. Today we are at the first two meters of a long marathon: 5G is a very powerful means that allows for change, then it will be the various business sectors that will have to find a way to adapt".

On the commercial side, Tim has already launched the first offers and to allow the 5G network to be used immediately, it has signed partnerships with Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo. In stores or on the Tim website, you can therefore buy the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and the Xiaomi Mix3 5G smartphone. The Oppo Reno 5G will also be available soon.
