Thyssen, Pg: "Convictions to be annulled"

In Cassation, the deputy Pg asked to re-determine the penalties for the crimes of multiple manslaughter and to re-evaluate the no to extenuating circumstances for four of the defendants - The families of the victims of the fire left the courtroom in protest.

The substitute Pg of the Cassation, Paola Filippi, has asked to cancel the sentences for all six defendants in the Thyssen trial. The goal is to re-determine the penalties for multiple manslaughter crimes and re-evaluate the no to extenuating circumstances for four of the defendants. According to the Pg, a third appeal process is needed.

After hearing the requests of the Cassation prosecutor's office, the relatives of the victims of the fire at the Thyssen in Turin left the courtroom in protest. Some mothers, sisters and wives burst into tears. Others shouted "sold" at the judges and were asked to calm down by the carabinieri and policemen.

Following the fire, which broke out in the night between 5 and 6 December 2007 at the Thyssen Krupp foundries in Turin in Corso Regine Margherita, the workers Giuseppe Demasi, Angelo Laurino, Roberto Scola, Rosario Rodinò, Rocco Marzo, Bruno Santino and Antonio Slave. Only their workmate Antonio Boccuzzi survived.

Already in the first appeal trial, malice was excluded. The latest conviction confirmed the charges of aggravated manslaughter and violation of safety regulations. Thyssen paid 13 million euros to the families of the victims and another 4 to the various civil parties who appeared in the process.
