The New Situation – Art in London in the Sixties: an exciting exhibition from Sotheby's (London 4-11 September) will focus on the decade in which British artists, many of them fresh out of art school, regained recognition and success both at home and abroad, in Europe and America and above all thanks to their presence at the Venice Biennials and of Sao Paulo.
What is most interesting is that many of the artists of this time are still little known to international collectors, where once the directors of museums and leading international gallery owners considered them peers of Hockney, Riley or Caro. This exhibition brings together over 40 artists to recapture the diversity and excitement of the London scene.
The exhibition features works for sale and loan in equal measure – thanks to a collaboration between Sotheby's specialists and the legendary sixties dealer Kasmin, whose Bond Street gallery was the first space called: white cube in London . Here Kasmin staged a series of groundbreaking shows, mixing big names in American artists with young British artists of the period, including David Hockney's first solo show in 1963.
