The Maneuver is "the apotheosis of corporatism in a populist sauce"

The Maneuver is "the apotheosis of corporatism in a populist sauce"

Louder than that, the rejection of the 2021 budget manoeuvre, which the Senate is preparing to approve definitively on Wednesday 30, could not really be: it is not Matteo Renzi who pronounces it, but a voice as authoritative as independent as that of the constitutional judge emeritus and chief jurist Sabino Cassese. In an editorial that appeared this morning in the Corriere della Sera, Cassese literally tears the 2021 Maneuver to pieces, not only for the botched way in which it was written and not only because it pushes up both the deficit (10,8%) and the public debt (158% of GDP), but for the incredible mix of corporate measures, sectoral, populist – basically: "gifts and tips" to keep the opposition quiet and the same majority groups”- which the Conte 2 government has packaged without even blushing.

The budget maneuver is, as Cassese defines it with crude language, “a mixed fry”, in which there is everything from funding for choirs, bands, jazz music to "experiential tourism training" courses, from eyeglass vouchers to wildlife recovery to the "national dementia plan" and so on. An avalanche of unproductive current expenditure and a rise in the public debt that Mario Draghi would define as "bad", indeed very bad. In short "the apotheosis of corporatism in a populist sauce".

Only one thing it is not in Maneuver 2021: the future of Italy and of the new generations who will once again have to pay for the bad governance of a completely inadequate political class, with rare exceptions, and who would do well to make their voices heard before it is too late to stop the national disaster.
