Naval systems horizon (Osn), the joint venture between Fincantieri and Leonardo, was commissioned by the Italian Navy to build the fourth new generation patrol vessel, with a total value of the operation of approximately 236 million euros. The order is part of the Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) program and also includes the necessary logistical support.

Osn, owned by Fincantieri with a 51% stake and by Leonardo with 49%, will now proceed to finalize the sub-supply contracts with the two companies having values ​​of approximately 163 million euros and 70 million euros respectively. The contract with Fincantieri represents a transaction of greater importance between related parties, while the one with Leonardo is considered of lesser importance based on the applicable relevance indices.

What is the Opv program

The OPV program is a key component of the modernization plan of the Navy Italian. This program aims to strengthen surveillance and control capabilities of maritime traffic, protect communication lines and the exclusive economic zone, and ensure environmental protection activities against threats such as toxic liquid spills.

The new generation patrol boats will be equipped to operate in a wide range of scenarios tactics and weather conditions. Their main functions include maritime surveillance and control of merchant routes, essential for maintaining the safety of Italian waters.

The new patrol boats: the technical characteristics

The new OPV patrol boats will stand out for their advanced technological solutions and standards of excellence in terms of automation and maneuverability. With a length of approximately 95 metres, a displacement of 2.300 tons and the capacity of accommodate 97 crew members, these patrol boats are designed to respond effectively to various operational scenarios.

One of the most innovative features will be the naval cockpit developed for Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Boats (PPA). This integrated station, co-produced by Leonardo and Fincantieri NexTech, will allow the management of naval and air operations by of only two operators: a pilot and a co-pilot. The station, located on the command bridge, will allow you to control not only the machines and rudders, but also some functions of the combat system.
