Giuseppe Conte has resigned. The Conte bis government officially ended this morning, shortly after noon, and now the ball passes into the hands of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. The meeting between the two, at the Quirinale, was quite quick: just under half an hour to formalize the resignation, already decided yesterday by the Prime Minister who in the meantime continues to work for a new majority and to create a Count ter, even if other hypotheses are not excluded: the so-called Ursula majority, opening up to the participation of a greater number of pro-European political forces, or a caretaker government, or even a government that can count on the so-called "Responsible" (the different options will also depend Conte's confirmation or not).
The latter hypothesis, or in any case that of an executive that can count on new supporters in order to obtain solid trust especially in the Senate, is growing in the last few hours: under the direction of the leader of the Democratic Center Bruno Tabacci, in fact, the group of "Managers" was born in Palazzo Madama, a formation of parliamentarians who would also like to organize themselves in the Chamber in order to offer the new government organized support and not a "rash", as has been said several times in recent days. This new group, according to the words of Senator Gregorio De Falco who will take part in it, has "health and management of the pandemic" as a priority. This is why he would support a government especially with a view to giving stability to the country and approving the Recovery Plan. On the other hand, a return to the polls should be excluded for the moment, for various reasons.
“The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella – reads the brief press release from the Quirinale -, received the President of the Council of Ministers Prof. Avv. Giuseppe Conte this morning at the Quirinale Palace, who has resigned from the government he presides over. The President of the Republic reserved his decision and invited the Government to remain in office for the handling of current affairs. The consultations will begin tomorrow afternoon, Wednesday 27 January“. Conte therefore remains in office, as per practice, for current affairs, but the game is still completely open.
