Meanwhile, in November the Italian public debt increased by 6 billion compared to the previous month, reaching a new all-time high of 2.020,7. The increase is essentially due to the borrowing requirement (net of disposals), amounting to 4,4 billion, and to the accretive effects on the debt of issue discounts and exchange rate trends (totalling 0,7 billion).

This was communicated by the Bank of Italy, explaining however that "in December, the significant surplus observed for the state sector and the strong decumulation of Treasury liquidity should have brought the debt well below the 2000 trillion threshold".

In the first eleven months of the year, the increase in debt (113,9 billion) reflects the overall borrowing requirement of general government (73,0 billion), the increase in Treasury assets at the Bank of Italy and loans from the liquidity (34,9 billion) and the issuance of securities below par (6,4 billion). The appreciation of the euro reduced debt by 0,3 billion. Almost €11 billion was contributed to the debt growth in the first 2012 months of 23 by support from euro area countries in difficulty, which includes Italy's share of the loans disbursed by the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) and the payment made in October of the first two tranches for the subscription of the capital of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM).

In November tax revenue accounted for in the State budget amounted to 31,4 billion, an increase of 1,4 compared to those of the same month of 2011 (30,0 billion). In the first eleven months, these revenues amounted to 340,7 billion, an increase of 3,1% (10,2 billion) compared to the corresponding period of 2011 (330,6 billion).
