Earthquake in the Aegean: 2 dead, hundreds injured

Two people died when the ceiling of a bar collapsed and a dozen were injured on the Greek island of Kos in the Aegean Sea as a 6,7-magnitude earthquake struck the Turkish city of Bodrum ( ancient Halicarnassus), the southern Turkish coast and the nearby Greek islands. The news is reported, inter alia, by the Daily Mail online.

More than 100 people were injured by the earthquake that struck the Greek islands and the Turkish coast in the Aegean Sea overnight. On the island of Kos an old building collapsed, injuring the inhabitants. Kos appears to be the area most affected by the earthquake.

The United States Geological Survey located the epicenter of the earthquake 10 kilometers south of Bodrum and 16 kilometers south of Kos, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The area is seismic and several aftershocks had been felt in the past weeks. Frightened people left their homes and poured into the streets fearing that the houses might collapse. In Bitez, a tourist resort 6 kilometers west of Bodrum, the quake was felt around 1,30 am local time.

Two strong aftershocks followed. The tourists guests of the hotels quickly returned to their rooms to recover their personal items but decided to spend the rest of the night outdoors, with sheets and pillows taken from the nearby deck chairs to set up improvised beds, according to the testimony of a journalist from the Associated Press on site. Beachfront hotels in the Turkish coastal city of Marmaris, filled with British tourists, were inundated, and earthquakes were felt as far away as the islands of Rhodes and Crete.
