Earthquake in Emilia: for Coldiretti at least 200 million in damages to agriculture

While awaiting the national emergency provision that will be launched by the government on Tuesday, the alarm was raised by Vasco Errani, president of the Region Emilia-Romagna, the hardest hit by the violent earthquake of magnitude 5.9 in the night between last Saturday and Sunday (and subsequently by dozens of aftershocks, still in the night between Sunday and Monday), with epicenter in the province of Ferrara: “These events cannot be entirely on the shoulders of the territories that are already suffering from them. Solidarity must be triggered by the whole country and I will repeat this clearly to the Government ". But how many – and what – are the damages currently quantified?

In addition to those - of inestimable value - to houses and historical and artistic monuments, there are those relating to companies in the entire area concerned, an area characterized by a strong agricultural component. Waiting for more precise estimates, in the morning the Coldiretti, after an initial summary inspection, he announced that "in the countryside of the area affected by the epicenter of the earthquake there have been dozens of collapses in rural buildings with houses, stables, barns, machinery and greenhouses damaged and estimated damages of approximately 200 million euros".

Then there is the case, significant as regards the symbol of the local economy, of 400 wheels of Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano lost, which represent heavy economic damage, for which the Grana Padano Consortium had initially assumed total losses of 250 million euros. “A very strong shock – commented the general director of the Consortium, Stefano Berni – which seriously compromised the structures of numerous warehouses together with several thousand tons of Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano, which will be melted. A very heavy damage which, however, did not cause any victims. We will roll up our sleeves and immediately start working to restore the situation as soon as possible, with the usual constructive and collaborative spirit that belongs to us".
