Earthquake: strong tremors in Central Italy

The earth shakes again. A strong earthquake was felt around 10.25 in central Italy. The magnitude is 5,3, according to the first estimates of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Ingv). The earthquake occurred between L'Aquila and Rieti, in the Montereale area (AQ). The shock was felt in Lazio, Abruzzo and Marche and was also felt in Rome.

About three quarters of an hour later, at 11, a new strong shock was felt throughout Central Italy, the magnitude is 14. The earth shook for several seconds even in Rome.

In the areas affected by the earthquake, in the municipalities of Amatrice and Accumoli, there have been some collapses: a cornice of the Amatrice school of hotel management, for example, gave way following the shock. The Fire Brigade is carrying out further checks in Amatrice and Accumoli, made more difficult by the presence of a lot of snow.

The Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, having heard the news of the new earthquake that hit central Italy, got in touch with the head of civil protection Fabrizio Curcio and is following the situation directly.

All the stations of the A24, the motorway that connects Rome, L'Aquila and Teramo, have been closed to check for any damage caused by the earthquake that has just occurred. This was announced by the company Road of the parks. According to Ingv surveys, the three tremors occurred about 30 kilometers southwest of Ascoli Piceno and 110 km north of Rome.

As a precaution, all metro lines in Rome are closed. The State Railways has decided to stop trains, for checks, on the Terni-Rieti-L'Aquila-Sulmona (until 17 pm) and Sulmona-Avezzano (until 19 pm) railway sections. Rides are being arranged for replacement buses.
