Emilia earthquake, assault on low cost Parmigiano Reggiano

“We put the damaged Parmesan up for sale at the sale price”. This is the idea of many Emilian dairy companies affected by the recent earthquake. And there was an immediate boom in requests. The photos of the wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano on the ground have been around the world on the web. “Arci Modena and Filieracorta have been inundated with emails requesting to order Parmigiano Reggiano from the company hit by the earthquake – reads a note from the associations -. At 15 pm there were more than 900 emails and we don't know if we will be able to handle all the orders".

On the Arci Modena website we read that “the wheels of Parmesan are found in a shed which can only be accessed with the accompaniment of the Civil Protection and it is not possible to ask for continuous attention to these needs. We therefore ask that reservations be suspended for the time being".

A small dairy, the Casumaro farm, was the first to come up with the idea, later imitated by the other 19 producers of the “La Cappelletta” social cooperative (S.Poxidenio, Modena). The peak in requests was then confirmed by the Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium, which represents all the manufacturing companies.
