Land of fires: Leonardo wins the contract for control of the territory against any vandalism

She is heralded as the best technological solution of control over waste and illegal spills in the Land of Fires. The test will be done with the commitment of the Leonardo to lead a consortium of companies. The public company has been awarded a monitoring and surveillance contract in the ASI area of Caserta, historically critical for unmanaged industrial waste. Leonardo prevailed because he proposed his Ganymede system, named after the large satellite, for "intelligent" video analysis. The equipment applies artificial intelligence and deep learning (artificial networks on useful data to intervene) with algorithms to stop the degradation of the area. All attempts to clean up and reclaim the land of fires in recent years have achieved partial results. The new project provides for the first time an integrated control system of the industrial areas of the ASI Consortium: Caserta, Ponteselice, Aversa Nord, Marcianise-San Marco Evangelista. Leonardo he will have to make everything safe and also guarantee the health of the people who work or are in contact with the ASI production fabric. The project is financed by the Ministry of the Interior, under the Pon Legalità with funds 2014-2020.

The land of fires at the center of struggles and claims for health

Known as one of the largest industrial agglomerations in the South, the ASI Consortium has an area of four thousand hectares with fourteen agglomerations where there are companies in the luxury, electronics, automotive, agri-food and logistics sectors. The presence of so much illegality in an area halfway between a polluted environment and development potential can no longer go. Spontaneous committees and environmental organizations have been fighting for years to zero and hope to regenerate an area bordering the Province of Naples. The story inspired dozens of books, surveys, films, exhibitions. The areas relating to the industrial agglomerations directly managed by the ASI Consortium of Caserta - explains Leonardo in a note - present different needs for intervention, all of which can be traced back to the primary objective of raising the level of safety and legality.

The control entrusted to Ganymede

The system "Ganimede" can be applied to all the cameras of the four agglomerations that are part of the Consortium, in which there are both industrial sites and non-urbanized spaces and not equipped with barriers. The platform will use artificial intelligence to analyze the videos, both live and previously recorded, looking for presences or anomalous behavior. You will see the infractions at the perimeter of the Consortium. The software and algorithms will be able to verify the movement of objects, waste, materials or people within the scene, useful information to highlight anomalous behavior or intrusions. This is certainly the most stimulating part of the project to try to trace who makes such a havoc of a territory that aspires to maintain its industrial vocation. They have not been lacking in the past and today there is certainly no lack of responsibilities of insensitive entrepreneurs to environmental issues and the recovery of production. Proof of this is the closure with fines of 543 euros of four companies in municipalities bordering the ASI.
