Terna, a new submarine power line for Elba

Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, continues to modernize the infrastructures, even in mountain resorts and islands. The latest investment announced, which is part of the maxi plan of 9 billion for the next five years, concerns the island of Elba, in Tuscany, which will be reached by a new 37 km long underground power line (of which 34 km underwater and another 3 km underground) which will connect it to the mainland, to be precise to the Municipality of Piombino. The work is worth 90 million euros and was authorized by the Ministry of Ecological Transition.

“A strategic infrastructure that will lead to doubling the connection lines between the national electricity system and the grid of the island of Elba. The new 132 kV power line it will contribute to improving the quality of the local infrastructure, guaranteeing important benefits in terms of safety, reliability and sustainability of the entire island, characterized by high electricity consumption in the summer period”, explains Terna in a note. The cable will be completely ecological, thanks to the remotely controlled drilling (TOC) technique, which allows the pipeline to be installed while limiting interference with aquatic plants and eliminating the impact of works on the coast. Once the installation activities have been completed, Terna will provide for the complete restoration of the state of the places, thus leaving the landscape geomorphological configuration intact.

The intervention is part of the investment plan of 515 million euros planned by Terna over the next 5 years in Tuscany. Construction sites are already starting in the next few weeks.
