Terna, Intesa, Generali, Leonardo, Pirelli: the big Italian champions of sustainability

The company led by Luigi Ferraris achieves its highest score ever (91) and the highest in the Electric Utilities sector of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index – Eighth inclusion in a row instead for Intesa Sanpaolo, the only Italian bank present, and for Leonardo – Performance in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index also for Generali – Pirelli world leader in the Automobiles and Components sector

Terna, Intesa, Generali, Leonardo, Pirelli: the big Italian champions of sustainability

The large Italian companies shine for sustainability: from Terna to Intesa Sanpaolo, from Generali to Leonardo. In the Electric Utilities sector, Terna was confirmed for the tenth consecutive time in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index 2018, in first place worldwide: the company that manages the national electricity grid in fact achieved a overall score of 91/100, highest ever for the company and highest among electric utilities (sector average: 46/100), improving by 4 points the 2017 figure recalculated according to the new methodology introduced this year. The primacy is confirmed by 9 of the 23 evaluation criteria applicable to the company: Terna is first in the economic criteria Materiality, Risk and crisis management, Policy influence, in the environmental criteria Environmental reporting, Operational eco-efficiency, Transmission and distribution and in the social criteria Social reporting, Human capital development, Corporate citizenship and philanthropy.

"For Terna, sustainability is a strategic lever, which guides our work every day towards an energy paradigm that is capable of creating ever greater value for businesses and the community", commented the Chief Executive Officer, Luigi Ferraris. "Terna's confirmation in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index is recognition of our commitment to introducing an inclusive model into our business, attentive to the needs of the territories and our stakeholders".

Intesa Sanpaolo, on the other hand, is the only Italian bank classified in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index Europe Dow Jones Sustainability Index World, among the most important global and European stock exchange indexes for evaluating the ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) dimensions of companies, establishing itself for the eighth consecutive year as one of the most active groups in the world in terms of economic, social and environmental sustainability.

Intesa Sanpaolo achieved a overall score of 80 out of 100, compared to an industry average of 54. The performance in the environmental area was particularly appreciable with a score of 90, compared to a sector average of 55. The maximum result was achieved in the sections dedicated to financial stability, risk management and business opportunities in the environmental area, to environmental reporting and financial inclusion. As regards the banking sector, in 2018 there were 27 banks included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World and 10 in the Europe index.

Performance to be noted also for Generali: “The Generali Group is proud to be included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. It is the recognition of our commitment to sustainability, which the Group has demonstrated with a long-term strategy. This result reflects the importance of the values ​​expressed in our Charter of Sustainability Commitments and which are concretely present in the daily life of our Group”, commented the CEO Philippe Donnet.

Leonardo has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices for the ninth consecutive year (DJSI). “Sustainability and innovation are the basis of our Business Plan”, commented Alessandro Profumo, Leonardo's Chief Executive Officer; "The reconfirmation is a satisfaction for all Leonardo's people, a recognition of what has been done in recent years and a stimulus for continuous improvement". Even the President, Giovanni De Gennaro, expressed satisfaction with the result achieved "This recognition reflects Leonardo's commitment to strengthening the responsible business management model through behaviors and processes oriented towards sustainability". In 2018, Leonardo is among the 8 companies in the Aerospace & Defense sector and one of the 9 companies based in Italy admitted to the DJSI.

Finally Pirelli is the world leader in sustainability for the Automobiles & Components sector in the Dow Jones World and Europe indices. This is what emerges from the review of the indices whose changes will take effect from 24 September, conducted annually by RobecoSam and S&P Dow Jones. The Bicocca group recorded an overall score of 81 points against the sector average of 32. Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones sustainability indexes are among the most important stock indexes on sustainability at a global level. The analysis involved over 2 thousand companies belonging to 60 industrial sectors through an integrated assessment of economic, environmental and social elements, i.e. the three dimensions in which the concept of sustainability is articulated, intended as the creation of lasting value for all stakeholders.
