Terna, Turin Innovation Hub inaugurated

The focus is on the IoT and on the advanced monitoring processes of energy transmission plants – Over the next 5 years, over 400 million euros of investments are planned for the electricity grid in Piedmont, of which over 100 million in Turin and its province.

Terna, Turin Innovation Hub inaugurated

It was inaugurated at the Terna headquarters in Turin and in the presence of the Mayor Chiara Appendino, the Chief Executive Officer Luigi Ferraris and the President Catia Bastioli, the first of Innovation hub – innovation development platforms – which Terna will soon launch in its local offices.

Through interaction and exchange with external realities such as universities, research centres, start-ups and businesses, the Innovation Hub will become a laboratory in which to create, develop and concretely test new ideas in the energy field. The integration of skills new and synergistic will therefore be the cornerstone of this experience which starts from the headquarters of Terna's operational area in Turin and will soon continue in other Italian cities.

Specifically, the Turin Innovation Hub, will be focused on IoT (Internet of Things) and on the advanced monitoring processes of energy transmission plants, developing four project areas (satellites, drones, robots and advanced sensors) functional to increasingly dynamic and innovative network control to guarantee system efficiency and safety . Thanks to a centralized data management it will be possible, among other things, to carry out a predictive maintenance of assets that will allow to reduce costs and increase the reliability of the transmission network.

The project is part of the national innovation and digitization process for which Terna will invest approx 700 million euros over the next 5 years. The goal, in an increasingly complex energy scenario, is to develop prototypes of innovative ideas focused on the new technological trends relevant to the company that manages the national electricity grid, thanks to the creation of working groups made up of subjects of different origins and skills. The projects that will be launched will favor the diffusion of the culture of innovation, the creation of future professional skills of excellence and the development of industrial solutions that can be implemented on a larger scale.

“We are proud to start this path of innovation right from Piedmont and specifically from Turin, which aims to create synergies between Terna's people and professionalism and the excellence of the territory to develop innovative ideas and paths for the benefit of a network increasingly modern, efficient, flexible and sustainable electricity. The Turin innovation hub confirms the importance of this city and this region in Terna's strategy which envisages investments in the Piedmontese electricity grid over the next 5 years of over 400 million euros, of which over 100 million in the city of Turin and its province ” declares Terna's CEO Luigi Ferraris, who adds: “We won't stop in Turin. We have 8 operational territorial units scattered throughout Italy and we aim to create innovation hubs in each of these units”.
