Electricity demand in Italy was 27,5 billion kWh, down by 2,8% compared to the volumes of the same month of the previous year due to temperatures 4°C higher than those of January 2017.

In January 2018, according to data from Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, electricity demand in Italy was 27,5 billion kWh, down by 2,8% compared to the volumes of the same month of the previous year. The performance of demand was affected by the calendar and temperature effect: this year, in fact, January had one more working day (22 vs 21) but an average temperature 4°C higher than in January 2017.

Territorially, the January 2018 trend variation was negative everywhere: -0,8% in the North, -4,2% in the Center and -6% in the South. In terms of the economic situation, the seasonally adjusted value of electricity demand in January 2018 recorded a negative change compared to the previous month (-2%). The trend profile remains on a stationary trend.

In January 2018, 83,4% of the demand for electricity was met with domestic production and the remainder (16,6%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (23,1 billion kWh) decreased by 15,1% compared to January 2017. The source of wind production increased (+9,7%), while all other sources decreased (geothermal -1,8%, hydro -2%, photovoltaic -5,1% and thermal -19,8%).
