It grows the demand for electricity in Italy. This is certified by Terna data according to which the request in May stood at 24,5 billion kWh, in 8,5% increase compared to May 2020. Last year, however, the figure was "strongly influenced by the drop in demand due to the initiatives implemented to contain the Covid-19 pandemic", specifies the company that manages the national electricity grid.
Going into details, a industrial level, the Imcei index developed by Terna recorded a strongly positive performance compared to the same month in 2020, returning to pre-pandemic levels driven by the growth of almost all monitored sectors returning above pre-pandemic levels.
Terna underlines that in May there was one more working day than last year and an average monthly temperature about 2 degrees lower. The seasonally adjusted figure corrected for calendar and temperature effects was therefore 9,5%.
A territorial level, all areas of the country last month showed a positive trend variation: +9% in the North, +8,6% in the Center and +7,2% in the South. In terms of the quarter, the seasonally adjusted value (and corrected for calendar and temperature) recorded a drop of 1,6% compared to the previous month (April).
Overall, in first five months of 2021, electricity demand in Italy rose by 6,6% compared to the same period of 2020 (+7,5% in adjusted terms).
Going forward with the data, in the month of May the demand for electricity was satisfied for approximately 86% with national production and for the remainder (14%) from the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (21,3 billion kWh) recorded a drop of 1% compared to May 2020. Wind (+15,1%) and photovoltaic (+5,9%) sources increased; thermal (-0,4%%), geothermal (-2,9%) and water (-11,4%) sources were down.
Finally, speaking of the import export balance, the change is equal to +170% due to a combined effect of the increase in imports (+58,1%) and a reduction in exports (-78,3%).
