Terna: growing electricity consumption during the Christmas holidays

Electricity consumption by Italians also increased during the Christmas holidays, confirming the positive trend that characterized 2021 and which saw the energy requirements return to pre-Covid levels. To establish it are the revelations of Terna which showed that from 20 December 2021 to 2 January 2022 consumption increased by 8,7%, compared to the same period of 2020-2021, and by 13,7% compared to that of 2019-2020, measuring data in line with those recorded in 2016-2017.

The downward trend does not differ from that typical of the Christmas period and, as usual, brings absolute energy values to the lowest levels of the year. But probably also the higher temperatures and the higher costs for the raw material related to the electricity sector have played a fundamental role.

In the two weeks under review the level of production renewable adjusted for calendar and temperature effects, it increased by 3,6% over the previous year. Clean sources reached 9,3 TWh, with hydroelectric and wind power contributing two-thirds of total production. In particular, on 25 December 2021 clean sources covered 43% of the daily national electricity demand.
