In 2022, according to data from Terna, the company that manages the national transmission grid, the electricity demand in Italy was equal to 316,8 billion kWh, a value down by 1% compared to 2021. The renewables covered a total of 31,1% of the demand, registering, in particular, a marked decline in hydroelectric production. The IMCEI index is also down: industrial consumptioni of energy-intensive companies decreased, in fact, by 5,4% compared to 2021. Terna communicates it.
Electricity: in 2022 demand down by 1%
2022 was one year two speed, with positive tendential changes in the first part of the year and negative starting from the month of August, the consequence of a series of concomitant factors: the measures of containment of consumption electricity implemented by citizens and businesses on the recommendation of the Government, the expensive prices which characterized the energy markets and the rather mild temperatures recorded in the autumn and winter months. On the production side, the contraction in hydroelectric generation (-37,7%), attributable to long period of drought, was partially offset by the increase in thermoelectric generation (+6,1%) and in particular by theincrease in the coal one following the actions implemented by the Government to deal with the gas crisis. In this scenario, the external balance remained substantially unchanged compared to 2021, against a strong variability during the year due to the volatility of prices on the energy markets.
Precisely with a view to promoting efficient consumption behaviour, in December 2022 Terna, in agreement with the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, launched We are Energy, an awareness campaign for the conscious and virtuous use of electricity in Italy. The communication campaign has identified a series of behaviors thanks to which it is possible to contain consumption, and therefore costs, with a view to sustainability, economic savings and greater energy efficiency, to the benefit of all. The electrical system app, available on all devices, has also been updated with a new feature: it's called Ecology and allows every citizen to easily identify the daily peak time slot in which it is preferable to consume less energy (Monday to Friday) and, therefore, be able to consciously choose to moderate one's needs while reducing costs for the entire electricity system Italian.
Electricity: all data for 2022
Analyzing i 2022 data, electricity demand in Italy totaled 316,8 billion kWh. At the territorial level, the variation resulted in decrease in the north (-1,5%) and substantially in line with the values of the previous year in the Center and South and on the islands (-0,3% and -0,2% respectively). 86,4% of the Italian electricity demand was met with domestic production and the remainder (13,6%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. Net national production (276,4 billion kWh) decreased by 1,3% compared to 2021 with the following breakdown by source: growth PV (+ 11,8%) and thermoelectric (+6,1%); in flexion thehydroelectric (-37,7%), Aeolian (-1,8%) And geothermal (-1,6%). The IMCEI index recorded a decrease of 5,4% compared to 2021.
Demand in free fall in December due to the heat
Moving on to the analysis of month of December 2022, overall electricity demand stood at 25 billion kWh, a value down by 9,1% compared to December 2021. The figure was also influenced by the presence of two fewer working days (20 vs 22) and by a average monthly temperature a good 2°C higher than in December 2021. The value of the monthly electricity demand, seasonally adjusted and corrected by the effect of temperature and the calendar, is down by 6,5%. In economic terms, the electricity demand in December 2022, seasonally adjusted and adjusted by the temperature and calendar effect, is substantially stationary compared to the previous month (November 2022). Again in December, the breakdown of production by sources: wind (-39,4%), hydroelectric (-18,6%), photovoltaic (-17,2%), thermoelectric (-6,1%) and geothermal (- 1,9%). As regards the import-export balance, the figure is up by 17,1% due to an increase in exports (+9,6%) and imports (+15,5%).
Industrial consumption: – 15% in December
The IMCEI index relating to the industrial consumption in December 2022 recorded a 15% decrease in the month compared to December 2021: almost all sectors were down, in particular those of the steel industry, mechanics and non-ferrous metals. Positive changes for the food, ceramics and glass industries; chemistry stationary. Even at the economic level, the seasonally adjusted and calendar-adjusted figure shows a drop of 6,4% compared to the previous month (November 2022).
The detailed analysis of the provisional monthly electricity demand for 2022 is available in the publication "Monthly Report on the Electricity System", which can be consulted under the heading "Electricity system >> Dispatching >> Operating data" of the website www.terna.it.
