In January, according to data from Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, the demand for electricity in Italy decreased by 1% on the same calendar compared to the same month of the previous year. Considering that this year the month of January had one working day less (19 vs 20), and the effect of temperature is negligible, the overall demand for electricity equal to 26,3 billion kWh corresponds to a decrease in 1,7% compared to January 2015.

The maximum power requested in January 2016 was 51.551 MW, a figure recorded on Tuesday 19 at 18.00, and 2,5% higher than the peak value of January 2015. The 26,3 billion kWh requested in the month of January 2016, 46,6% are distributed in the North, 29,2% in the Center and 24,2% in the South. At the territorial level, the demand for electricity in January 2016 was down everywhere : -1,2% in the North, -1,1% in the Center and -3,0% in the South.

In January 2016, 84,9% of the demand for electricity was met with domestic production and the remainder (15,1%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (22,5 billion kWh) grew by 1,8% compared to the volumes of January 2015. The sources of thermoelectric production (+8,9%), wind (+3,1 .2,0%) and geothermal (+10,5%). The sources of photovoltaic (-29,2%) and hydroelectric (-XNUMX%) production are decreasing.

In economic terms, the seasonally adjusted change in electricity demand in January 2016 compared to the previous month was
equal to -1,0%. The trend profile remains decreasing.
