The sultry heat of August caused Italian consumption to rise. According to Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, the demand for electricity amounted to 24,9 billion kWh, a figure that represents a growth of 4,8% compared to August 2014. However, the increase drops to +2,1% if adjusted for the effects of temperature and calendar, given that in 2015 there was an extra working day ( 21 against 20) and an average monthly temperature almost 2 degrees Celsius higher.
Terna also analyzes the distribution of consumption in the month of August. Of the 24,9 billion kWh required 41% went to the North, 31% in the Center and 28% in the South. Furthermore, at a territorial level the variation in electricity demand in the month of August was positive everywhere: +4,7% in the North and South, +5,5% in Center.
The company also communicates that "in August 2015 the electricity demand was met for 90,3% with domestic production and for the remaining portion (9,7%) from the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries."
