Terna: savings of 90 million euros with summer time

Daylight saving time will kick in between Saturday and Sunday: Terna expects savings in electricity consumption of 543,8 million kilowatt hours - In economic terms, savings relating to summer time for 2013 should be around 90 million of Euro.

With summer time, according to Terna's estimates, we will have overall savings in electricity consumption equal to 543,8 million kilowatt hours. The hands will be moved forward in the night between Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 March, while solar time will be restored about seven months later, in the night between 26 and 27 October 2013.

Energy savings correspond, in quantity, to the average annual requirement of 180 families. In terms of costs, considering that a kilowatt hour costs the end customer on average about 16,6 euro cents after taxes, the estimated economic savings relating to summer time for 2013 is equal to over 90 million euros. From 2004 to 2012, Italy saved a total of over 6,1 billion kilowatt hours, corresponding to around 900 million euros of lower cost.

In the spring-summer period, the month that marks the greatest estimated energy savings is April, with 125,8 million kilowatt hours (equal to 23,1% of the total). In autumn, however, the record goes to the month of October with 157,4 million kilowatt hours saved. This is due to the fact that April has "shorter" days in terms of natural light than the months of the entire period. The demand for electricity during the warmer months is also linked to the use of air conditioners, and is therefore independent of summer time.
