Terna: demand for electricity falls, -3,7% in March

According to data released by Terna, electricity consumption fell by 3,7% on an annual basis in March, to 26,2 billion kWh - 82% of energy demand was met with production national – Demand down 3,7% year-on-year in the first quarter.

Electricity consumption in Italy fell in March. According to data released by Terna, in fact, the demand for energy stood at 26,2 billion kWh, down by 3,7% on an annual basis. Net of the effects of temperature, the change in electricity demand in March however becomes -2,9%.

Of the 26,2 billion kWh required in March 2014, 46,9% is distributed in the North, 29,1% in the Center and 24,0% in the South. At the territorial level, the change in demand of electricity in March was negative everywhere: -4,4% in the North, -3,4% in the Center and -2,6% in the South.

The demand for electricity was met for 82% with national production and for the remainder (18%) with the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (21,8 billion kWh) fell by 8,5% compared to March 2013.

The sources of photovoltaic production (+36,9%), water (+19,7%) and geothermal (+5,2%) are growing. Thermoelectric (-17,7%) and wind (-24,8%) sources fell. In quarterly terms, the seasonally adjusted change in electricity demand in March 2014 compared to the previous month was +0,1%. However, the trend profile remains on a decreasing trend. In the first quarter of 2014, the demand for electricity decreased by 3,7% compared to the values ​​of the first quarter of 2013; with the same calendar, the value is -3,5%.
