Terna: consumption still growing in October, +5,6% in 10 months

In October the electricity demand in Italy it was equal to 26,5 billion kWh, an increase of 1,1% compared to the same month in 2020. This is certified by Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid.

The figure, seasonally adjusted and corrected for calendar and temperature effects, is up by 2,3%, while compared to September 2021 the increase is 0,9%. Broadening the time horizon, in the former 10 months of the year underway the demand for electricity increased by 5,6% compared to the same period of 2020 (in adjusted terms the change is equal to +5,8%).

Returning to October, also a industrial level The recovery in consumption continued, with the IMCEI index recording a positive performance (+1,3%) compared to October a year ago, "thanks to the growth of the main sectors", underlined Terna. Under the territorial profile, demand rose above all in the South (+1,8%) and in the Center (+1,5), while in the North the increase was more contained (+0,7%).

Last month, the electricity demand was met for about 85% with national production and for the remaining 15% from the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. The renewables covered 32% of the monthly demand, with a clear increase in thermoelectric (+10,7%) and wind (+5,4%) sources of production. All the others were down (hydroelectric -31,4%; photovoltaic -1,7%; geothermal -1%).

Furthermore, starting this month, Terna has announced that it has expanded the research sample monitored in the IMCEI index, which examines the consumption of large energy-intensive customers in the cement, lime and plaster, chemistry, mechanics, non-ferrous metals sectors , iron and steel, food, means of transport, ceramics, glass and paper. In its new configuration, the IMCEI also analyzes data from 435 industrial customers connected in medium voltage, which are therefore added to the 530 connected to high voltage. The index, with the new calculation parameters, recorded an increase in industrial consumption of 1,3% compared to the values of October 2020 and of 1,4% compared to September 2021.
