Terna: electricity consumption +1,3% in May

In the first five months of 2018, demand rose by 1,6% compared to the corresponding period of 2017 (+1,5% on a like-for-like calendar basis) – Hydroelectric production is still growing strongly.

Terna: electricity consumption +1,3% in May

In May 2018, according to data from Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, electricity demand in Italy was 26 billion kWh, up by 1,3% compared to the volumes of the same month in 2017. This year, May had the same number of working days (22) and an average monthly temperature substantially in line with that of May 2017.

Demand in the first five months of 2018, equal to 131,6 billion kWh, is up by 1,6% compared to the corresponding period of 2017. With the same calendar, the value is +1,5%. At territorial level, the trend change in May 2018 was positive in the North (+2,1%) and in the South (+0,4%) and zero in the Centre. In economic terms, the seasonally adjusted value of electricity demand in May 2018 recorded a positive change compared to the previous month (+0,4%). The trend profile remains on a stationary trend.

In May 2018 87,3% of the electricity demand was met with national production and for the remainder (12,7%) from the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (22,9 billion kWh) grew by 1,1% compared to May 2017. The source of hydroelectric production increased sharply (+69,7%), others decreased (geothermal -0,4%; thermal -12,3%; photovoltaic -13,6%; wind -28%).
