Tennis, Italy triumphs in the Davis Cup after 47 years: Sinner decisive in the victory against Australia

After 47 years Italy triumphantly reconquered the Davis Cup, beating Australia 2-0. Decisive victories in the singles by Arnaldi (against Popyrin) and above all by the new star of Italian and world tennis, Yannik Sinner who unceremoniously dispatched de Minaur by beating him 6-3 and 6-0 in just an hour and 22 minutes.

It was since 1976 that Italian tennis had not won the golden salad bowl, symbol of the Davis Cup: those were the times of Panatta, Barazzutti, Bertolucci and Zugarelli who won the final in Chile. Things went badly instead in 1998 when Italy was defeated in the final by Sweden.

“Now we can be happy and celebrate. Winning the Davis Cup is a project that started a long time ago. We have overcome many difficulties" was the first comment from captain Filippo Volandri, which was immediately echoed by Sinner, who this year has definitively exploded, collecting victory after victory, consecrating him in the Olympus of international tennis. “We are a united team, we had an excellent season and finishing like this gives us energy to start again next year. We heard the Italians are close” Sinner said. Sonego also beamed: "Ours is a magnificent group and I'm happy to be part of it."
