Telecommunications, Slim resizes America Movil to escape new charges

The Mexican telecommunications tycoon Carlos Slim has announced a radical reorganization of his group, America Movil, which aims to bring the market share below the 50% threshold, compared to the approximately 80% it is currently at. All to escape a new regulation which would impose heavy burdens on the operator identified as "dominant" following the exceeding of the aforementioned threshold.

In announcing the maneuver last night, America Movil did not provide many details. It limited itself to reporting that it will proceed with the sale of assets to "a new operator" that has not been identified. In Mexican landline telephony through the subsidiary Telmex it holds 80 percent of the market, in cellular communications 70% through TelCel.

In addition to Mexico, America Movil is a multinational company present in 26 countries, mainly in Latin America, with 292 million subscribers to cellular services, of which 74 million in Mexico.
