Telecommunications: Letta, only European integration can cope with the US and Chinese markets

Only European integration can lead to the consolidation of the telecommunications market and consequently face the American and Chinese competition. These are the words of Prime Minister Enrico Letta. The reference is not obvious, but the head of government seems to speak favorably of the Telefonica-Telecom agreement

European integration must also lead to the consolidation of the telecommunications market, favoring concentration in large "European champions" capable of facing American and Chinese competition. These are the words of Prime Minister Enrico Letta who illustrated the work on the digital agenda at the end of the EU Council in Brussels.

The prime minister did not mention Telefonica, but his statements seemed to indirectly refer to the agreement which handed over the relative majority of the main Italian telecommunications group, Telecom Italia, into Spanish hands.

During the press conference Letta then said: “Greater European integration means the potential birth of great European champions who are in a position to compete with their Japanese, Chinese and American competitors mainly. This represents a positive point on which Italy has fought in recent days”.

"The theme of scale has become the most relevant", added the Prime Minister, specifying that "Europeans are beaten by the dimension of scale with some exceptions" and that the debate of these two days at the EU Council on the digital agenda shows that "the choice that has been made is finally against the trend".
