Telecom-Sky, TV via optical fiber is born

The "quadruple play" fiber optic TV was born in Italy, i.e. it integrates fixed and mobile telephony services, broadband and ultra-broadband connectivity and premium television content usable "any time and any where" on all devices connected to the network , thanks to strategic partnership between Telecom Italia and Sky. The two realities come together by putting their assets and skills in synergy to give life to the new project, which will also contribute to increasing the demand for ultra-broadband in the country.

The contents of Sky therefore become driver for the diffusion of Tim's ultrabroadband and, at the same time, access to the latest generation Telecom Italia networks allows Sky to benefit from a new distribution platform for its offer of contents and services.

With this agreement, the two companies take a decisive step forward towards the so-called “convergence” between media and telecommunication. The initiative strengthens Tim's strategy in the dissemination of innovative services and confirms its role as a technological enabler thanks to very high-speed networks, bringing more and more families closer to the quality of content and the new ways of using it that characterize the viewing experience Sky.

Similarly, the agreement with Telecom Italia has strategic value for Sky because it also makes available on broadband and ultra-broadband all its rich offer of exclusive programs and services, thus extending the commercial basin of pay TV to potential subscribers residing, for example, in the historic centers of the numerous art cities of the country which do not have the possibility of installing a satellite dish and therefore accessing the best Italian television offer.

The joint "Tim Sky" offer will be available to Tim's consumer customers who have a fiber optic connection starting from 30 to 100 Megabits per second and ADSL at 20 Megabits per second.

"Starting today with Sky, we are launching a new model of collaboration between Telcos and Media Companies in Italy which allows us to present ourselves to the market with a fully convergent offer - he declares Marco Patuano, Chief Executive Officer of Telecom Italia. We are convinced that this strategic agreement represents an important driver for the development of new ultra-broadband networks and innovative technologies which are at the heart of our industrial plan with over 5 billion euros of investments in the three-year period 2015-2017. This partnership makes us particularly proud because it allows our customers to access valuable content with high levels of quality thanks to the technological capacity of Telecom Italia and the editorial wealth of Sky".

“This partnership is an example of how two large leading companies that have always invested in innovation can create together something that was not possible in Italy until recently, thus stimulating the demand, hitherto only potential, for quality pay TV also through ultra-fast broadband – he declares Andrea Zappia, Chief Executive Officer of Sky Italia. From today, Telecom Italia's fiber will bring all the richness of content and the excellence of the Sky viewing experience, with HD, on demand, Restart and My Sky features, into the homes of millions of Italian families , which for various reasons have so far not been able to install a satellite dish. It is an agreement that has a strong strategic value for us, because it widens the commercial area of Sky, now present on all the main distribution platforms. To understand its relevance, just think that in the United Kingdom almost 20% of families have a pay offer through cable or broadband”.
