Telecom Italia: Iliad weighs in and goodbye to roaming

The CEO Flavio Cattaneo: "Iliad does not worry us, Italy is a very different market from France". But the farewell to roaming, confirmed today by Juncker, also has an impact

Telecom Italia still under pressure on the Stock Exchange, after the crash of yesterday's closing at -3,8%. And the CEO Flavio Cattaneo plays the security card: “Iliad's entry into Italy doesn't worry us: Italy is a very different market from France. Suffice it to say that today the average revenue per customer in France is higher than ours”.
According to Cattaneo, the difference between markets is also in the methods of acquiring new customers: “In Italy we have the Pisanu law on anti-terrorism which requires the identification of the SIM holder using an identity card, not in France; and this is obviously something to take into account,” added Cattaneo.

Above all, the CEO recalls: "We are continuing our work and Tim's results in the current quarter are very positive, both in terms of the EBITDA margin and for the top line: to date, acquisitions in the fixed quarter have grown significantly compared to last year. These are important figures that strengthen our position”, concluded Cattaneo.

However, the share continues to fall (-4% in the last month) and today it was at -0,7545 euros (-0,53%) to then recover and fall again. Beyond the fluctuations of the day, however, it is not only the risk represented by the entry into the field of Iliad, its objectives of penetration on the Italian market and its notoriously aggressive policy on prices that influence the propensity to sell of operators. The EU decision to review the initial roaming cost reduction project (the use of other operators' networks for calls from abroad) and to proceed directly to the abolition of roaming from June 2017, with a more structural effect compared to the initial indications, which envisaged a limit of 90 days at zero cost.

In practice, the new solution announced on Monday and also confirmed today by the President of the Commission Jean Claude Juncker (the "stop on roaming tariffs" foreseen from June 2017 will be maintained), he said this morning, Wednesday, in his speech on the Union. "Everyone must feel at own home” even when traveling in the European Union), runs the risk of further compressing the turnover of telecommunications companies. "The problem with a roaming scenario with zero-costs is represented by the potential arbitrages that arise between countries with different tariffs", explained the analysts of Banca Akros. And it is no coincidence that, again on Monday, the Euro Stoxx tlc index dropped 1,65%.
