Telecom, new generation Ngan fiber optic network in Pescara

Telecom Italia launches the new generation fiber optic network (Ngan) in Pescara which will make innovative services available to citizens and businesses. The initiative is part of Telecom's national development plan for the creation of the Ngan network with FTTcab (Fiber to the cabinet) architecture, which plans to reach 100 cities by 2014 with a coverage of around 6 million real estate units, corresponding to the 25% of the population.

Within the next year, Telecom Italia will lay around 120 km of optical fiber in Pescara which will serve to connect over 390 street cabinets equipped with new generation electronics, thus reaching around 75 citizens and around 7 business users. The fiber will be laid for the most part in existing cable ducts. 35 km of new excavations will be built. The works will concern all areas of the city: they will start from the Zanni, Centro and Tiburtina districts and will subsequently be carried out in the Stadio and Colli areas.

Starting in the coming months, the citizens of Pescara will be able to start using ultrabroadband connections with speeds ranging from a minimum of 30 to a maximum of 60-80 Megabits per second, which make current services much more efficient and enable new generations of applications such as high-definition TV, telepresence, cloud computing services for businesses and services for the creation of the smart city model for local administrations such as security and monitoring of the territory, infomobility and sensory networks for environmental remote sensing.

To boost the new Ngan network infrastructure and minimize the impact of the works on the city, Telecom Italia and the municipal administration today signed a Memorandum of Understanding thanks to which innovative excavation techniques will be used to lay cables which allow the reduction of intervention times and costs, while ensuring a low environmental impact.
