Teatro alla Scala in Milan, presented the 2023-2024 season

It was presented today the 2023-2024 season of the Teatro alla Scala in the presence of Giuseppe Sala, Mayor of Milan and President of the Teatro alla Scala Foundation, Dominique Meyer, Superintendent and Artistic Director, Riccardo Chailly, Music Director, Manuel Legris, Director of the Corps de Ballet.

For the 2023/2024 season the Teatro alla Scala presents a calendar of over 250 shows including Opera, Ballet, Concerts and programming for kids and families. The big names in orchestra conducting, direction, singing and dance make up a panorama full of confirmations but also of unexpected proposals, completed by exhibitions, meetings, visits and insights.

The 2023/2024 Opera Season of the Teatro alla Scala consists, in line with the previous one, of 14 performances, 10 of which are new productions. To these is added the inaugural show of the 2024/2024 season during the calendar year 2025. Including the latter, in 2024 La Scala will stage 3 operas by Giuseppe Verdi and 2 by Giacomo Puccini; Antonio Cesti, Luigi Cherubini, Gaetano Donizetti, Ruggero Leoncavallo and Pietro Mascagni, Jules Massenet, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Gioachino Rossini, Nino Rota, Richard Strauss, Richard Wagner are represented with one title each.

The Italian repertoire is at the center of the programming, starting with the solemn inaugural title, Don Carlo, directed by Riccardo Chailly in the Italian version in four acts written by Verdi for La Scala directed by Lluis Pasqual and a cast worthy of the occasion. Don Carlo it was directed for two inaugurations by Claudio Abbado, whose tenth anniversary of his death falls in 2024. Followed by the new production of Simon Boccanegra directed by Lorenzo Viotti and directed by Daniele Abbado, but also the filming of Pagliacci e Cavalleria rusticana in the now historic staging by Mario Martone with Giampaolo Bisanti on the podium and by Don Pasquale in Davide Livermore's production set in Cinecittà, directed by Evelino Pidò.

2024 will see the completion of the work on the new building in via Verdi, which houses new rehearsal rooms for the Orchestra and the Ballet, as well as the offices currently located in other buildings, and guarantees further depth to the stage.

Ithe ballet

La Ballet Season conceived by the Director Manuel Legris consists of 7 titles ranging from nineteenth-century classics such as Coppélia in the new guise of Alexei Ratmansky in the opening and La bayadère according to Nureyev to the great twentieth-century titles, from MacMillan's Histoire de Manon to Neumeier's Dame aux camélias and works by Robbins and Balanchine, up to the revival of Madina by Mauro Bigonzetti and Fabio Vacchi. On the contemporary side, the focus is also on the new names of Garrett Smith, Sol León and Paul Lightfoot, Simone Valastro. An intense and diversified program made possible by the great growth of the Company in recent years.

I concerts

La Symphonic Season presents important conductors and productions of great commitment with the involvement of the Choir directed by Alberto Malazzi: opening Riccardo Chailly directs i Four sacred pieces by Verdi, then Daniel Harding the Requiem by Mozart and Chailly again the majestic Gurre-Lieder by Arnold Schönberg. The Music Director is also involved in a program dedicated to the Second Vienna School, while Ingo Metzmacher recalls Luigi nono in the centenary of his birth with Como una ola di fuerza y ​​luz (concert repeated at the Teatro Municipale Valli on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Musica e Realtà review in Reggio Emilia). Lorenzo Viotti approaches Rimsky Korsakov, Ravel and Rachmaninov and Daniele Gatti, awaiting his return to the opera season scheduled for 2025, conducts Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 9.

But also exhibitions

The Scala Theater Museum, born in 1911 which, with its exhibition activity, has in recent years been an opportunity for reflection on the history and evolution of La Scala and on the relationship between the Theater and the city. Proposes in opening of the month of November 2023, a tribute to Maria Callas in the year of the centenary, an ideal continuation of "Maria Callas in scena" of 2017 and of the previous "Maria Callas - Gli anni alla Scala" of 2007. Maria Callas is a constant presence in the myth and in the memory. La Scala is dedicating the communication campaign for the next Season to her, the Museum has set up two exhibitions on her in the new millennium, recounting her story and stage art. The new exhibition, also in the light of the flourishing of studies on the echo of Callas' art in literature and in the other arts, will look at the myth through the eyes of today's art. The exhibition will be curated by Francis Stocchi, curator of modern and contemporary art at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, while the staging will be entrusted to the set designer Margaret Palli. The next exhibition, starting with November 2024, will instead be dedicated to Giacomo Puccini.
