Taxi: strike suspended, reform postponed

The national taxi strike called for Friday 18 March has been suspended. The decision was made after Wednesday's meeting between the representatives of the category and the Government. The appointment ended with the commitment of the ministries of Transport and Economic Development not to deal with the regulation of the sector in the competition bill, but with a special enabling law.

“For the moment, the strike is suspended – explained to AGI Loreno Bittarelli, leader of Uritaxi – waiting to see what the Government does. The ministries of development and transport have assured us that they will ask for the withdrawal of the amendments to the competition bill contested by the taxi drivers, and have also "undertook to set up a permanent discussion table with the trade unions".

The strike was called against the deregulation of the sector, which would have favored services such as Uber (app for private cars) and rental cars with driver.

According to Massimiliano Dona, secretary of the National Consumer Union, "the Government has given in to the streets and, for fear of the strike, has submitted to the lobby of taxi drivers, giving up addressing the matter, postponing it indefinitely".
