Tav, Conte finally says yes: "Not doing it would cost too much"

VIDEO – The prime minister announces his position live on Facebook. Satisfied League, Di Maio calls Parliament into question where, however, the #siTav line-up is in the majority

Tav, Conte finally says yes: "Not doing it would cost too much"

On the Tav in the end Giuseppe Conte decided yes. A few days after the response that the Italian government is required to send to Brussels, and after France has already confirmed its commitment to the project, the Prime Minister has chosen Facebook live to inform Italians. “I represent a government – said the premier – supported by two political forces that think in opposite ways on this point. There is a lot of money at stake, which is yours, and must be managed with the utmost care. They must be managed as a good family man would do”.

But after holding back on the Tav for a year, how do you explain the positive turnaround? “New facts have arrived, elements to be taken into account in the response we must give” to Europe “by Friday. The EU has said it is willing to increase the allocation from 40% to 55%, this would reduce costs "for Italy". But most of all, “not realizing it – explains Conte – would cost more than doing it. The decision not to carry out the work would expose us to all the costs deriving from the breaking of the agreement with France".

“Under these conditions, only Parliament could adopt a unilateral decision” to stop the Tav, given that the ratification of the agreement was made by Parliament is Conte's conclusion.

All elements, of course, available for a long time and not from today. So much so that Pd secretary Nicola Zingaretti points it out:

In the tam tam of politics, there are those who see Conte's exit as an attempt to distance themselves from the M5S and play the game with the League, in favor of the Tav, independently. And there are also those who see Conte's position as a candidate to manage an autonomous political formation. Too early to draw conclusions, we will have to see the next steps such as the report in Parliament on the Russia case and the negotiation on differentiated regional autonomies. Everything will be played in the next few hours, between Wednesday and Thursday.

And Luigi Di Maio? He too replies via Facebook and downloads to Parliament: “I listened carefully to the words of President Conte, which I respect. The President was clear, now it is Parliament that has to express itself. It will be the Parliament, in its centrality and sovereignty, which will have to decide whether a project that is about 30 years old and which will be ready in another 15, practically dating back to the fall of the Berlin Wall, should be the priority of this country". But Di Maio cannot fail to know, as he writes these words, that in Parliament - if you really want to get to the count - the numbers agree with the "party", as transversal as you want, #siTav: Lega, Fratelli d'Italia, Forza Italy and the Democratic Party are all in favor of the project.
