Alcoa turnaround, the sale to the Swiss by 15 February

The deadline has been set. By 15 February there will be the sale of the Alcoa plant in Portovesme to the Swiss Sider Alloys. The general secretary of the Fim Cisl communicates it in a note Marco Bentivogli adding "it is the victory of those who have not stopped fighting for work".

The decision came during the meeting at Mise between trade unions and the company in the presence of the Minister of Economic Development, Carlo Calenda, which marked a turning point in a dispute that has been going on since 2012.

"Finally some good news - adds the trade unionist - which is worth double on the Italian industry front, given that we are talking about the Ex-Alcoa of Portovesme, which has been on a standstill since 2012, that is when the company formalized its intention to close the site Sardinian. An industrial site located in one of the poorest areas of Italy and with unemployment rates among the highest in the country”.

Then the due “acknowledgments: ” It must be recognized that Minister Calenda has laid the foundations for the dispute on multiple fronts, even the decree on energy-intensive consumers and yesterday he met Alcoa again. An agreement will be signed in the coming days which provides for the transfer to Invitalia and from the latter to Sider Alloys by February 15th. Prior to that date, a program agreement will have to be built and signed with local institutions to encourage investment, reconditioning of the plant and restarting production. We asked to start a comparison on the industrial and employment plan in January 2018".

The Swiss company Sider Alloys also expresses satisfaction: "Restarting Portovesme will be a very tough mission and few believed in it", commented the CEO Giuseppe Mannina.

The Minister of Economic Development Carlo Calenda, who, replying to an Alcoa worker on Twitter, writes: “We will postpone the celebrations until the first product leaves the factory. In these cases it is better to be prudent and superstitious. But I'll come on the 22nd to see you at the garrison. I'll bring the pizza".
