Switzerland, the news revolution: reports and live broadcasts made with iPhone

Léman Bleu, a French-speaking channel based in Geneva, has already experimented with the creation of an entire news program (news services and live TV) without even using a camera: everything is filmed with Apple smartphones, thanks to the collaboration with Swisscom.

Switzerland, the news revolution: reports and live broadcasts made with iPhone

Goodbye tripods or heavy cameras to carry on the shoulders, Switzerland experiences the revolution of the news: journalistic services, but also the live broadcast of the news itself, packaged directly with an agile and very light iPhone. It's happening on the TV frequencies of Francophone channel Léman Bleu, which is based in Geneva and which already this summer experienced collaboration, specifically, with Apple: the services of the correspondents were filmed with iPhone 6, thanks also to a partnership with the telecommunications company Swisscom, who provided smartphones and technical assistance.

There has also been some 100% iPhone edition, between recorded videos and live TV, also made entirely with an object that weighs only a few hundred grams. And after the summer test, the network decided to go ahead, for a number of reasons: first of all, the video quality is absolutely good, and secondly, the cost savings are guaranteed, given that the cost of traditional video cameras weighs heavily on a company that has a budget of just 4 million Swiss francs (somewhat less in euros).

But it's not just this: “It's an opportunity for review the way of making television – explained the director of the Swiss channel, Laurent Keller -: with a single object we are thus able to do almost all the necessary operations: video, surfing the internet, updating social networks. We also have better territorial coverage, because correspondents can go to the places of the news and record quickly and live with their smartphone".

At the moment there is only one limit: “The quality of the images is very good – explains Keller – but the iPhone reacts worse to changes in brightness than cameras, and has a lower zoom capacity. This can be a problem especially for dynamic recordings, such as those of sporting events”.
