Superlega, UEFA appeal accepted: Juve, Real Madrid and Barcelona at risk of sanctions

Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus at risk of sanctions for the European Super League. One year after the launch of the initiative that caused an earthquake in continental football, a judge of the Court of Madrid has lifted the ban on inflicting “punishments” to the clubs involved imposed a year ago on UEFA and Fifa.

In detail, Judge Sofia Gil validated UEFA's appeal, revoking the precautionary measures imposed against the governing body of European football, which prevented the companies from being sanctioned, protecting them from possible sanctions by FIFA and Uefa, but also by national leagues and federations after the announcement of the project which envisaged the creation of a semi-closed championship made up of 12 founding clubs which, once the bomb exploded and given the first – harsh – reactions of the football bodies and fans, had gradually dissociated, with the exception of Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The magistrate held that the Tribunal did not have “competence or jurisdiction”, for prohibit any sanctions. "It is up to the disciplinary bodies of UEFA and the TAS (Sports Arbitration Court) to decide on possible sanctions against clubs", reads a document viewed by the Spanish sports newspaper Marca. “The clubs concerned will be able to object, requesting the appropriate protective measures". The judge also believes that "the threat of sanctions against the three remaining clubs in the Superlega does not make it impossible to carry out an autonomously financed project".

Recall that in May 2021 UEFA had established fines of 100 million and exclusion from the cups for one or two years. Proceedings suspended a month later with the first act of the Court of Madrid. The new decision by the same body could now reshuffle the cards on the table.

"UEFA today received the order of the Court of Madrid, which fully revokes the precautionary measures", reads a note from the organization issued by AP News. “UEFA welcomes this decision and is assessing its implications. UEFA will not be issuing further comments for the time being," the statement concludes.
