The winners of the third edition of "Sud Top Wine" have been announced at Taormina Gourmet, an oenological competition that rewards the best wines from six regions of Southern Italy - Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia - conceived and organized by Cronache di Gusto . An international jury led by Daniele Cernilli and composed of Wojciech Bońkowski, Daniela Dejnega, Jean Charles Viens, Anthony Rose and Federico Latterin after the tasting of over 600 wines – which took place on Etna at Villa Neri Resort & Spa in Linguaglossa, awarded first place and two Winners for each of the 21 categories in the competition.
“We register a growing quality in the wines of Southern Italy – says Fabrizio Carrera, creator of Sud Top Wine and Taormina Gourmet and director of Cronache di Gusto -. Now we will continue the work of promoting the awarded wines abroad, because the characteristic of Sud Top Wine is precisely this: the work begins right now, with the award ceremony”. Daniele Cernilli underlined how often foreign countries underestimate some Italian regions "while Mediterranean wines are definitely progressing, in Italy and in particular in the South, where there is great biodiversity and a large presence of native vines".
Many confirmations but also many surprises emerged from the tasting, as well as many new realities that took part in Sud Top Wine for the first time. The signal coming from the USA is important, as explained by Gino Colangelo, president of Colangelo & Partners, where Italian wine is establishing itself very well despite the Covid-19 emergency.
“The market is reopening – explained Colangelo – and there is plenty of room for new wineries that want to enter. Sud Top Wine is important precisely to promote the knowledge of the wines of Southern Italy, less known than other Italian denominations. Today the American winelover is more sophisticated and delves deeper than before but is certainly more educated on northern Italy as a wine. There is therefore a lot of space to make the wines of the South known and I say this as a third generation Italian American, the first fan of Southern wines”.
