An atrocious attack on Paris and Europe. This is how Prime Minister Matteo Renzi described yesterday's Paris attacks on Twitter a few minutes after midnight. The prime minister gave a brief press conference this morning in which he expressed "moved solidarity with the families of the victims".

"They hit France but by hitting France they hit all humanity," Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said in his brief speech before the press at Palazzo Chigi.

"This morning - he said again - like all Italians, seeing the images of the survivors of the Bataclan theater, I tried to ask myself what the terrorists were questioning, perhaps what we have most precious, peace and freedom beyond to life. They are attacking our way of life. Like all Italians, I too know today that the terrorists will not win”.

Meanwhile, the interior minister Angelino Alfano has announced the raising to level 2, the one just before the maximum alarm, of the security measures after the tragic events of last night in Paris. "I heard from the Chief of Police and ordered a further immediate increase in security levels throughout the country," the Interior Minister wrote on Facebook. "The Italian anti-terrorism – added Alfano – is in constant contact with the French correspondents to follow with extreme attention what is happening in France, also with the aim of preparing further preventive interventions".

The meeting of the committee for public order and safety chaired by Prime Minister Renzi was held in the morning. "We have intensified controls throughout the country", remarked Matteo Renzi, asking the political forces for maximum responsibility and announcing that he will meet the group leaders of all the political forces.

The attacks in Paris also raise concerns in view of the imminent Jubilee of Mercy which will start on December 8th. Copasir, through the mouth of the president Giacomo Stucchi, made it known that attacks in Italy in the future cannot be excluded. “Anyone who says otherwise – added Stucchi – is a utopian”.

Meanwhile, the news, communicated by the Traffic Police, of the reopening to traffic of the Mont Blanc Tunnel between Italy and France, which had been closed for a few hours during the night, is just over. The decision to stop traffic was linked to the Paris attacks.
