Stepchild adoption, we vote. Bran: better adoption of the son

In the Senate, expectations are rising on the crucial vote, in a few hours, on the amendments to the Cirinnà bill. But why use foreign terms when it is possible to use Italian periphrases and neologisms? The Accademia della Crusca rebels and suggests replacing "stepchild adoption" with "adoption of the child of the partner" or "adoption of the child"

Stepchild adoption, we vote. Bran: better adoption of the son

The "stepchild adoption" foreignism is not only not acceptable, but it is even "unthinkable" for the Italian language. The Accademia della Crusca can't stand it anymore and decides to intervene straight leg on the current debate relating to article 5 on the civil unions on the day when the crucial votes on the amendments to the Senate will take place Cirinnà bill. Great expectations for the decisions relating to the "super kangaroo" proposed by PD senator Andrea Marcucci which, if approved, would cancel most of the amendments presented by the opposition, but also by Catholic Democrats. Every attempt at an agreement has now failed and attention is focused on the fate of the aforementioned article 5, the one on the "stepchild adoption” which perhaps from tomorrow will change its name due to the recriminations of the academics.

Obviously in this case the law has nothing to do with it, the "custodians of the Italian language" take it out on journalists, commentators and politicians who prefer to use foreign terms that are difficult to understand for the majority of public opinion rather than Italian periphrases, which are much more appropriate and appropriate.

Indeed, according to Crusca, it would be preferable to use the periphrasis "adoption of the partner's child", already used by many, or even better "adoption of the child”, taking advantage of a local neologism proposed by the honorary president of the Accademia della Crusca Francesco Sabatini.

For Incipit – which includes Michele Cortelazzo, Paolo D'Achille, Valeria Della Valle, Jean-Luc Egger, Claudio Giovanardi, the president of Crusca Claudio Marazzini, Alessio Petralli, Luca Serianni, Annamaria Testa, and to which on this occasion added Sabatini, honorary president of the Accademia della Crusca – 'stepchild adoption' requires a certain skill in the use of English, “so much so that even in Parliament more than one senator has shown some embarrassment in pronunciation. If senators have similar incidents, what will happen to ordinary citizens?”.

According to Sabatini's proposal, therefore, the English term "stepchild" would be translated with an Italian neologism modeled in analogy to other degrees of kinship acquired over time, such as compare, consuocera, consuocero. “This word – it is explained – with a clear meaning, analogous to words of high use in indicating kinship, is already meeting with a certain favour, also because the literal translation of 'stepchild' into 'stepchild' certainly does not adapt to our times and to our laws. It seems to Incipit that son/daughter can be advantageously supported, with the hope that they will have luck and spread”.
