Stellantis chooses Melfi to produce the electric car

stellantis chose the establishment of Melfi (Basilicata) for the creation of a superlinea which from 2024 will produce electric cars. From the new pole they will come up to 400 cars a year: these will be four new models full electric and of different brands. The news - an anticipation of the industrial plan which will only be published at the end of the year – was communicated on Tuesday by the leaders of the group during a meeting with the government and trade unions at the ministry of economic development.

Not only. The deputy head of Stellantis Europe, Davide Mele, also announced that the Melfi plant (the largest in Italy, with 7.200 employees) will host one of the four new Stellantis platforms: the "Ftla medium", designed for cars with a autonomy from 700 kilometers.

The Minister of Labor, Andrea Orlando, defined Tuesday's meeting as “a first positive step, from which indications emerged of a willingness to make a significant investment in the reality of Melfi”.

The owner of Economic Development, Giancarlo Giorgetti, instead considers the reaffirmation of the territorial vocation of Stellantis “positive. We start with Melfi, which will be enhanced. It is also important that there are guarantees on employment and that there are no nasty surprises”.

Positive reactions from sindacati. According to Ferdinando Uliano, secretary End, "the advance of the industrial plan for an Italian factory is positive: we will open a discussion table to verify the issues connected to the employment theme, making a punctual verification of the consistency of the company's declarations".

For Rocco Palombella, secretary of the Uilm, “it is positive that the company has not declared structural redundancies. And it is positive that the first investment starts from Melfi, a reality chosen to start the ecological transition. We want to better understand what it means to bet on a super line, how, when and with what effects”.

Francesca Re David, secretary of the Fiom, and Michele De Palma, automotive manager, ask for "a national framework agreement with the participation of workers which has at its center an industrial plan that safeguards installed capacity and guarantees social stability and employment continuity for the next five years".
