Stellantis redraws its own productive geography in Italy. Two moves in parallel – the Return of the Maserati GranTurismo e GranCabrio nello historic Modena factory andProduction of the new Fiat 500 hybrid begins at Mirafiori – redefine the industrial center of gravity of the group in the country. A strategy that aims to strengthen two distinct but complementary poles: artisanal and sporting excellence in Modena, mass production and technological hybridization in Turin. However, skepticism remains among the unions concerned about the employment future of the historic Turin headquarters.
Modena takes back the Trident: the GranTurismo and GranCabrio return home
From the second half of 2025, the Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio will once again be assembled in the Modena plant, where Maserati has its historic headquarters. “It is a proud and strategic decision,” commented Saint Ficilli, CEO of Maserati, who underlines how the choice represents a return to the roots but with an eye on innovation: “With this decision, Maserati reaffirms its strategic vision: to build an innovative, responsible and Italian future, and to make the city, together with the supply chain, the luxury hub for the Stellantis group”.
Modena, already the production site of the MC20 supercar, it consolidates as well as center of excellence of automotive luxury branded Stellantis. The plant also hosts the new Fuoriserie Workshops, a space dedicated to the extreme customization of Maserati models, equipped with an advanced painting line.
The transfer from Mirafiori concerns the assembly of the GTi and GSi models, while the the bodywork and painting phases will remain in Turin, creating a production chain distributed between the two plants.
Mirafiori reorganizes: the hybrid 500 is launched
Il resizing of Maserati production in Mirafiori comes plywood since the start of production of the Fiat 500 hybrid, considered by Stellantis a key model for its sustainable offer in Europe. This step will allow ensure operational continuity for staff, partly reallocated from the Maserati line to the new 500, and partly employed in collateral activities such as the production of Edct and C514 gearboxes and in projects linked to the circular economy.
I sindacati Fim, Uilm, Fismic, Uglm and Aqcfr welcome the move as regards Modena, defining the decision as "a concrete opportunity" to give new impetus to a factory hit by the redundancy fund. They express, however, strong doubts about the prospects of Mirafiori: “Mass production is needed to saturate the Turin plant”, they say, asking for theUrgency of further assignments of mass-market hybrid or electric models.
More Fim-Cisl's tone is critical Turin and Canavese. For Rocco Cutrì and Igor Albera, the decision to move the Maseratis to Modena represents "the confirmation of the worst hypothesis". The fear is that the Luxury Hub project is no longer there born right in Turin with models such as the Quattroporte, the Ghibli and the Levante, which have already disappeared from the scene without replacements.
“Production will remain split in half: painting in Turin, assembly in Modena. It is difficult to understand the industrial logic behind it, if not as an extemporaneous decision”, say the unionists. The judgment is clear: without a clear strategy on the future of the Italian brands – from Maserati to Lancia and Alfa Romeo – “movements and reshuffles will be of little use”.
Stellantis has committed to meet with trade unions next week for an update on the industrial plan. The wait is now for the new strategic direction (The name of the new CEO will be announced soon), which will have to clarify what the real investments in Mirafiori will be and what will be the fate of Italian production within an increasingly global group.
