Startups, Lombardy is the pink jersey: it has 21%

The results of the Quarterly Report on innovative startups show the growing incidence on the total of limited companies, as well as better profitability indicators (ROI: 0,11 against 0,03; ROE: 0,25 against 0,04) and higher added value .

The Ninth Quarterly Report was recently published on the main demographic and financial trends of Italian innovative startups, created by the Ministry of Economic Development in collaboration with InfoCamere and UnionCamere. The report shows that as at 30 September 2016 there were 6.363 innovative startups registered in the dedicated section of the Business Register, with an increase of 420 units (+7,07%) compared to the previous survey of 30 June. The incidence of innovative startups on the total number of Italian joint-stock companies now stands at 0,4%, up from 0,38% at the end of June and 0,35% at the end of March. At the end of September, the total number of shareholders of innovative startups was 25.622, 2.577 more than at the end of June; to these are added 9.042 employees (+849) employed in 2.593 innovative startups with at least one employee (43,63% of the total). The data on employees, from INPS sources, include all subordinate workers, including part-time and seasonal workers, and do not include VAT-registered compensation. The document feeds the section dedicated to reporting of the innovative startup portal of the Ministry of Economic Development website.

Lombardy is confirmed as the most populous region with 1.382 innovative startups, equal to 21,7% of the national total. Emilia-Romagna follows with 782 (12,3%), Lazio with 625 (9,8%), Veneto with 492 (7,7%) and Campania with 404 innovative startups (6,35%). However, the region with the highest incidence of innovative startups in relation to joint stock companies is Trentino-Alto Adige (1,05%). Followed by Marche (0,77%), Emilia-Romagna (0,7%) and Friuli Venezia-Giulia (0,62%).

Overall, the innovative startups that presented at least one balance sheet recorded a gross production value of 2015 million euros in 585,2, a significant increase compared to the 325,6 million of the previous survey (2014). This is due not only to the greater number of companies on which it was possible to make the calculation (+34,7%), but also to the growth in the average value of production (+33,4%): in 2015 this was approximately 152 thousand euros, an increase of 38 thousand euros on the figure relating to the previous year. Furthermore, the degree of fixed assets on the balance sheet assets is also particularly high: the ratio is equal to 29,4%, almost 9 times greater than the average ratio of other joint-stock companies, equal to 3,3%.

Here then is that profitable innovative startups have significantly better profitability indicators than those of other profitable joint-stock companies (ROI: 0,11 vs. 0,03; ROE: 0,25 vs. 0,04), generating higher added value (32 cents for each euro of production against 22).
