Stadio Milano, the Meazza viable for another 10 years

What need is there to build a new stadium in Milan, revolutionizing the structure of an entire district, if the "old" Giuseppe Meazza is still usable and indeed enjoys excellent health? The San Siro Coordination has been asking for it for some time, the district committee which for years has been leading – supported by the opinion of authoritative experts – a battle against the redevelopment project of the area wanted by Inter and Milan and endorsed by the Municipality of Milan. The intentions of the clubs is to build a new facility, complete with offices, shopping center and skyscrapers in the surrounding area. But the current stadium has obtained the certificate of static suitability and will therefore be usable for at least another 10 years: "The state of health of the Meazza stadium - claims the Coordination in a statement - can therefore no longer be used by real estate companies as an excuse to build a new stadium and above all to build 3 skyscrapers, a multiplex, a shopping centre, a hotel on the green area of San Siro”.

“Like any building – the committee insists – the Meazza stadium is also subject to testing. His previous certificate of competence, valid for the decade 2010/2020, had expired. The Stadio Meazza has therefore been subjected to new testing in recent weeks. The test was successfully passed the Meazza stadium has been declared suitable for the next 10 years. Until 2030”. Not only that: according to the civil engineer Riccardo Aceti, the current stadium it is in even better condition than it was in 2010, also thanks to maintenance and adaptation interventions that were carried out in the decade 2011-2020: "I emphasize this aspect - he comments - because this further and more and more confirms the non-need to give up the plant, redeveloping it where strictly necessary in a modern key , in addition to the construction of the multifunctional panoramic gallery, as envisaged in our alternative project".

“Project that also sees a significant increase in surfaces that generate commercial income for an optimal return on investment” adds the engineer Nicola Magistretti. The project the engineers are talking about plans not to demolish the Meazza, as Inter and Milan would like to do, however, arousing more than one perplexity on the part of the citizens of the neighborhood. First of all because the area, of almost 300.000 square meters, is owned by the Municipality and therefore by the citizens themselves: its "sale" for a private project would cause a shortage in the public coffers estimated at 720 million in 90 years. Furthermore, the Coordination has more than a few doubts about the transparency of the operation: “The situation of property of the proponents remains nebulous, so much so that there is an anti-mafia investigation underway”. Finally, the committee points out that it is the same law on stadiums that closes the discussion: “A new stadium can be built if the existing cannot be restructured”. Instead, the existing one is usable and restructured.
